Introduction
This marked my second year attending this event. Given its local nature and considerable size, I opted to participate once more. FanExpo PDX is a three-day event held at the Oregon Convention Center, dedicated to fan culture spanning from anime to Star Trek. Each year, it showcases actors, authors, directors, and more for fans to engage with. This year, notable appearances included a significant cast from The Hobbit, as well as Harry Potter stars Bonnie Wright and Matthew Lewis. Overall, it was a delightful experience for all fans.
Arrival and First Impressions
Registration was straightforward. The vendor/artist coordinator consistently demonstrates kindness and hospitality. He explained that he reviews each applicant's artwork and strategically allocates table placements on the convention floor. They recognized us immediately, making the check-in process effortless. Reaching our table was also simple, as all aisles were clearly marked, and tables were labeled with large cards displaying artist/vendor names. We typically cover ours with our tablecloth and utilize our "shop sign" that extends into the aisle for better visibility.
Day 1 provided a VIP experience for attendees who purchased such tickets. This allowed them early access, opportunities to meet exclusive celebrities, attend select panels, and shop. All the guests we interacted with were exceptionally pleasant. Most attendees stopped by briefly, and even if they did not make a purchase, they ensured to take my card.
The Friendly Atmosphere Among Staff
The staff demonstrated exceptional kindness and respectfulness throughout the entire event, creating an atmosphere that was both welcoming and supportive for all attendees. Their demeanor was not only friendly but also professional, which contributed significantly to the overall experience. Each interaction was marked by a genuine willingness to assist, making it clear that the staff valued the presence of both artists and visitors alike.
Accommodating and Approachable Personnel
They were consistently accommodating and approachable, making it easy for attendees to seek help without hesitation. Whether it was answering questions about the venue layout, providing information on artist schedules, or offering assistance with logistics, the staff members were always ready to lend a hand. Their positive attitude was infectious, encouraging a sense of community among participants.
Strategic Placement for Maximum Support
Several staff members were strategically positioned near the artist alley, which was a bustling hub of creativity and interaction. This location allowed them to provide immediate support to artists as they engaged with fans and potential buyers. Additionally, there were personnel stationed at the entrance to the vendor area, ensuring that assistance was readily available when required. This thoughtful arrangement not only enhanced the flow of the event but also ensured that any issues could be addressed swiftly, minimizing disruption and allowing everyone to focus on the experience.
Active Engagement by the Coordinator
The coordinator played a pivotal role in fostering a positive environment by actively engaging with the artists throughout the venue. They moved around with purpose, taking the time to stop and converse with individual artists, showing genuine interest in their displays and the stories behind their work. This level of engagement not only made the artists feel valued but also encouraged them to showcase their creativity with pride. The coordinator's presence was a reassuring reminder that the event was well-organized and that the needs of the artists were being prioritized.
Their commitment to excellence was evident at every turn, making the event a memorable experience for all involved.
The Impact of a Positive Environment
The welcoming atmosphere significantly influenced my decision to return once more in 2027. It was particularly gratifying to observe the enthusiasm and engagement of fellow returning artists and vendors. I had the opportunity to exchange goods and establish new friendships with them. My only regret is not being able to visit every table during my brief breaks to explore the convention. Nonetheless, I look forward to reconnecting with those artists next year.
Memorable Highlights and Personal Reflections
Attending FanExpo PDX annually for the past few years has proven to be an excellent decision. It is one of the standout events for me and marks the beginning of each year. Our interactions with fans of my artwork were overwhelmingly positive, and I was pleased to see many returning fans from previous years and other conventions. A particularly memorable moment was when I had the opportunity to repair a young fan's cherished earrings. Although they had already purchased a similar set from me, I wanted to restore the original pair due to their sentimental value. Witnessing their joy after the repair truly made my weekend special.
I eagerly anticipate returning in 2027 and hope to have the opportunity to meet new artists.
